Peter Mac Manu, a former Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has raised concerns about the hazards of vote buying to the country's democracy.
His remark comes after delegates in the NPP's recently concluded primaries publicly acknowledged collecting money from some of the candidates.
According to the delegates who talked to JoyNews, they received GH400 from the Vice President's camp and another GH300 from Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong throughout the election process.
However, the candidates have indicated that these funds are supplied to cover the delegates' travel costs.
In response to the claims, Mr Mac Manu voiced his disgust, claiming that such payments are prohibited.
Mr Mac Manu went on to say that Ghana should take a lead from Nigeria, noting that "in February, Nigeria arrested 69 people for paying bribes for elections." So, in Nigeria, accepting bribes for votes is not open, as we just witnessed on television, since you will be imprisoned.
He also advocated for public education to deter residents from engaging in the activity. "So let us look at the law, let us bring it to the front burner, and let's sensitize our citizenry because it is going to destroy our democracy,"
he stated Over 200,000 NPP delegates voted today to choose a candidate to represent the party in the forthcoming 2024 general elections.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister of Agriculture Dr Owusu Akoto Afriyie, and former Member of Parliament for Mampong Francis Addai-Nimoh are among the presidential candidates.
